L’une des premières distinctions, qui est fondamentale, est que la mitose est un processus propre aux cellules somatiques alors que la méiose n’affecte que les cellules germinales. Mais cela ne s’arrête pas là…
C’est quoi la mitose ?
Définition :Division de la cellule au cours de laquelle chaque chromosome se dédouble.
Lorsque la mitose a lieu, les chromosomes dédoublés à deux chromatides se rassemblent sur la plaque métaphasique/équatoriale et alignent leur centromère sur la plaque équatoriale. À l’anaphase, il y a disjonction des chromatides et chacune des paires de chromosomes homologues à une chromatide migre vers les pôles. En fin de télophase, on obtient donc 2 cellules filles ayant chacune un caryotype identique et surtout un génotype identique (mêmes allèles) à celui de la cellule mère.

Et la méiose ?
Définition : Division de la cellule (mitose) en deux étapes, avec réduction de moitié du nombre de chromosomes.
En ce qui concerne la méiose, elle se déroule en deux divisions cellulaires. Lors de la première prophase (I) a lieu le crossing-over, ou enjambement (voir vidéo), qui ne s’applique pas à la mitose (même s’il y a des exceptions, mais on ne les traitera pas ici). Durant la métaphase (I) les chromosomes se placent sur la plaque équatoriale par paire et c’est à l’anaphase (I) qu’il y a une différence majeure : les chromosomes sont séparés de leur homologue, et ils effectuent séparément leur migration polaire. On a ainsi deux noyaux contenant chacun un des chromosomes d’une paire.
À la prophase (II) on retrouve des chromosomes doubles à deux chromatides qui ne sont donc plus par paire et alignent leur centromère sur la plaque métaphasique en métaphase (II) et enfin à l’anaphase (II) il y a disjonction des chromatides et migration polaire. À la fin de la méiose, on obtient donc 4 cellules filles, chacune au génotype unique.
